As a university engineering student, I rely on MarginNote to annotate textbooks and manage assignments. I would like to suggest a feature that could make problem‑solving inside the app even more efficient.
It would be extremely useful to insert a blank, free‑hand note page—linked to a specific exercise in the PDF—on which I can write my solution with the Apple Pencil. The behaviour would be similar to MarginNote’s current “Extend” feature, but because exercises and problems are typically set out in narrow columns, a toggleable scratch page linked to each problem would be a cleaner and more appropriate solution. After finishing the problem, I could simply collapse or hide this page so it doesn’t clutter the reading view; a discreet icon beside the original exercise would indicate that a solution page exists and allow me to reopen it whenever needed.
This capability would streamline practice sessions, keep annotations organized, and further enhance MarginNote’s appeal—especially for students like me.
Thank you for considering my suggestion and for your ongoing work on an outstanding application.
Thank you so much for using MarginNote and sharing your valuable suggestions!
I’d like to clarify a few points. Is what you described somewhat similar to the “extend note”? I noticed that you mentioned your topics are listed in a narrow - column format. Are you looking for an adjustable - width margin to better fit your topics? I would be extremely grateful if you could provide more detailed descriptions or screenshots.
The concept is related to Extend Note, but tackles a different need:
Separate scratch page, not just extra vertical space.
Extend Note adds writing area at the bottom of the selection (full width of the page).
My proposal inserts a dedicated blank page (or canvas) that opens only when needed and collapses afterward, leaving the original page unchanged.
Column‑friendly.
Many textbooks present exercises in narrow columns. Extending downward or widening the margin can disrupt the layout or cover adjacent text. A pop‑up scratch page avoids this issue entirely.
Icon‑based toggle.
After writing my solution with Apple Pencil, I would hide the scratch page; a small icon beside the exercise (or in the margin) would indicate that a solution exists. Tapping the icon would reopen the page.
Thank you again for considering this enhancement. I believe it would streamline practice sessions and greatly benefit students who use MarginNote for problem‑solving.
Dear Carlos
Thank you so much for your such detailed and comprehensive feedback! I have read and tried my best to understand your needs. I think that after you make an excerpt from a document in MarginNote , there will be an icon labeled “Conversation”. After clicking it, you will get an expandable blank page, and you can click the button in the upper right corner to collapse this page. As shown in the picture, I’m not sure if this can meet your needs.
Best regards,
