In order to use marginote 4 with zotero, i installed zotfile, which could be great in combination to marginnote’s 4 “external folder” so i can send my pdfs back and forth through that folder.
But when i sync the annotated pdf back to zotero, the annotations aren’t there, since the pdf needs flattening which produces another copy… then i have to delete the original and rename the flattened… unless i am missing something, this is cumbersome
Could there be an option to autoflatten the pdfs of a chosen folder?
Wouldnt that be useful? Do you guys use marginote with zotero differently?
I don’t use Zotero but I think maybe I don’t like “flattened” pdfs. Isn’t it the case with flattened PDFs that the highlights are no longer seen as highlights in other apps? I would like those highlights, boxes and other notations to be recognized as such by other apps (DevonThink or Bookends in my case) so that I could deep link to them.
I think what you are proposing is a great idea and should be considered. I think my idea is probably asking too much.
I also think the so-called “Zotero integration” is just a side effect of MN supporting external files and is not really integration of any kind at all.
Edit: If it did as you suggest, how would that document then appear in MN? Would it have flattened coloured regions that are also overlayed with MN’s excerpt regions? If this were to happen automatically would then each save layer a new paint of colour over those regions? I think the only way to do this would be to save it as unflattened. But then MN would have to be able to read Zotero’s highlights and we’d have true integration.
