Full Markdown Export

Currently, the export options in MarginNote are quite limited or not very practical. The PDF exports cannot be modified, the backup format only works within MarginNote itself, and the other export formats are either too niche or proprietary.

Would it be possible to implement a complete export to Markdown (.md)? It is widely adopted, open, and future-proof (it even works for notes structured as mind maps with graph view).

There was an unofficial tool (and an unapproved plugin for Obsidian) for this, but it is abandoned now. Could the development team consider reviving it… maybe even integrating it into MarginNote itself as a feature?

I sincerely hope development on MarginNote continues long into the future… I rely on it heavily, especially for its advanced features (that have no equivalent in Obsidian or other tools) BUT I’d like to be sure that my data remains secure and accessible no matter what happens.
At the moment, there’s no stable, commonly-used export format that guarantees long-term access to my notes.

Thanks for considering

I did some deeper research and tried installing Obsidian-Bridge and Companion manually from GitHub (since there’s no other option). After four years, it seems nothing is working anymore. From what I understand, development was coordinated with the support team and the product manager (it’s even pinned in the topics section), so I’m honestly surprised that such an important feature has ended up in this state.

For anyone who might come across this post in the future and face similar issues, here’s some of the information I found:

At the moment, the only possible workaround seems to be downgrading to a previous version to get Obsidian-Bridge working again (which can be tricky on Apple devices), or exporting via PDF, though that makes most of the data harder to edit.

@Adeline, is there any way to use the plugin on MN4? I’m really concerned about losing all my work and would love to find a solution as soon as possible. Perhaps you know of another universal backup method that isn’t based on Markdown or Obsidian-Bridge?

We apologize, but this plugin is currently non-functional as its developer has ceased updates.

To address this, we are actively supporting plugin developers through the following efforts:

  1. Compiling and publishing relevant documentation to facilitate development and maintenance.
  2. Expanding promotional initiatives to increase visibility and support for developers.

So we have to wait until a hobbyist developer decides to take on the task of creating an autonomous backup system, right?
(Sorry, I don’t think I understood that correctly. English isn’t my first language, so I might have missed some nuances of the reply)

Sorry, I was referring to Obsidian-related plugins.
