[iOS] App crashes after adding media/documents to external folder

Hi,

I added a relatively large amount of pdf documents and mp4 files manually to a folder on iOS, which I then added as an external folder in the app.

On my M1 iPad, after keeping MarginNote open for a while, all the files are visible as expected.

However, on my iPhone 13 Pro, MarginNote closes within a couple minutes. If I then reopen it, the same thing happens again a couple minutes later… consistently. And the documents and media files are not available, only the folder icons show but they remain empty.

Hypothesis: I think there may be an issue with memory management, or maybe some other resource handling, which affects iOS devices with limited processing power. But it’s just a guess.

Needless to say, this is a significant impediment to the user experience in iPhone since I cannot work with my files in MarginNote. Please, could you ask your development team to try to trace the bug? @Adeline

Thanks in advance.

Hello

Could you please assist us in solving bug1 by performing two steps? Specifically, record a video showing how the bug occurs. Look for the following: in the “Settings” app of your iOS device :right_arrow: Privacy & Security :right_arrow: Analytics Data :right_arrow: Analysis & Improvement, is there an analysis file in .iPS format that starts with “MarginNote” followed by a timestamp (rather than containing “diskwrites” or “wakeups”) during the crash period? Could you please send it to us

Hi @mono

here I’m providing the requested screen video. It shows the following:

  • iOS Files contains a video that can be played in VLC. It is available locally.
  • The same folder is accessible within MarginNote iOS app
  • But here the video does not show
  • After keeping the app open for 1-2 minutes, it closes.

I checked the Analytics data, but unfortunately there is no analysis file that contains “MarginNote”.

Maybe this is not a real crash, but just iOS deciding that the app is using too many resources and therefore closing it… ? Then the fix would possible be to accept larger processing delays but request less resources from iOS. I am wildly speculating here, admittedly…

Thanks in advance for looking into this. Much appreciated.

Anything else I can provide as input to help debug this? @mono

Hello

I’m very sorry, I just saw your reply. From the video, it seems more like the issue is related to the inability to open such a large video file. Could it be due to device performance issues? I’m not sure, and we need to have the technical department analyze the situation.

Have you tried restarting the software? Is the situation still the same after restarting? If the issue is not resolved, could you please send us this video via private message for testing?

Yes, restarting app or the iPhone itself does not solve it. It’s not clear which video causes this because I added hundreds. It’s also not clear if a specific video causes the issue or the large quantity…

However, I have now upgraded to iPhone 16 Pro. I will let you know in case issue is also reproducible on the new device
