Making HTTP requests from an add-on

I’d like to create an add-on to synchronize notes to a backend app I’m writing. I’m noticing that HTTP GET and POST requests seem to be blocked, including those to HTTPs.

Could it be that outbound connections are blocked in the add-ons API? The methods themselves exist, as far as I can tell. If this is the case, is there any way for me to unblock them?
