MN4 files not saving to icloud

when I upgraded to MN4 app, I enabled transfer of all my MN 3 files. My MN3 files were all created via iCloud vs on my iPad. But when transferred to MN4 they did not store in iCloud but rather on my iPad. I have set “cloud sync” on each individual study set but that didn’t do it. 1. How do I shift these existing study sets from my iPad to iCloud without damaging anything? 2. How do I create future study sets via iCloud? When I click the “+New” button in the study set library, MN 4 doesn’t give me an option to save in iCloud. Thank you.

Hello

Please show me a screenshot of the cloud synchronization interface.

To fix MarginNote 4 (MN4) files not saving to iCloud, ensure iCloud Drive is enabled for the app in settings, check for sufficient iCloud storage, and toggle iCloud synchronization off and on within the MarginNote 4 app settings. Often, files created in older versions might remain in local storage, requiring a manual move to the iCloud Drive folder.

Wow, I’ve really gone through it with this local vs iCloud thing. To my astonishment, it appears that I can successfully drag items in Finder from the MarginNote 4 folder in “on my Mac” (I don’t know how I ever even got to it: ~Library/Containers/QReader.MarginStudy.easy/Data/Documents) to the MNDocs folder inside MarginNote 4 on iCloud (‘~/Library/Mobile Documents/iCloud~QReader~MarginStudy~easy/Documents/MNDocs’).

I then can see all the documents on both the iPad and the Mac versions, and the links in the mind maps work correctly!

Presumably now I can turn off the “version backup” (Settings → Backup & Restore) and rely on iCloud sync? (I was going to let the “version backup” just put everything on Google Drive, but that doesn’t synchronize with the iPad!)

IMPORTANT UPDATE: If your MarginNote is NOT the App Store version, do a small test before moving all your files!

Per my discussion with Claude about this (which has been ongoing :face_with_tongue:), my using the App Store version of MN4 likely helped this movement between local storage and iCloud storage go smoothly. I don’t know for sure whether moving things from the downloaded version would preserve the links, etc.!

Your MN3 files were transferred as local iPad files, so enabling Cloud Sync alone won’t move them to iCloud. You’ll need to manually move each study set/library to iCloud storage. Once the main library is set to iCloud, all future study sets should save there automatically.
