Pencil Squeeze trouble

Setup: iPad Pro M4 + Apple Pencil Pro set to select eraser when squeezed & auto-deselect when released

How to replicate: [Only inside pdf’s, not in the mind map!!!] When squeezing to erase, if released (stopped squeezing) while the pencil is still registered as touching the screen, the tool menu (the one that you get by clicking on a tool to change color, or size or other attributes) appears.

This is not happening every single time, so I think there is a bit more to it, but if you just write with the pen in a pdf, then squeeze to erase, actually erase a few lines and release the squeeze before you lifter the pencil from the screen, the menu pops-up.

I think nobody actually wants to trigger tat menu with this “gesture” so I’m pretty sure it’s a bug.

Regardless, it is annoying for two big reasons:

  1. It is not 100% consistent, so it’s very hard to form any sort of muscle memory.
  2. Most importantly, the iPad’s screen is not 100% precise on if the pencil really touches it or not (especially if you have Hover on in your settings). This is mildly annoying when you know you lifted your pencil a mm or two before the screen stopped recognizing the stroke, but in this case, I keep releasing the squeeze once I feel the pencil is not touching the screen, but since that is not very precise, it still triggers the menu to pop-up.

On short, please just fix this “stop squeezing while touching the screen to pop-up the menu” bug.

Edit: I added a video where this occurs. You can see it’s inconsistent, so I’m sorry I can’t really tell you exactly what triggers it.

Ahhh yes I emailed them about this about 2 months ago. I have checked every single day for an update to the iPad app and you will notice it has been 2 months since there has been one. That’s 60 days where, every time I open my iPad, I check for an update to see if this issue is fixed, and it isn’t. Awell. Hopefully soon.

In my email I explained what triggers it as well, and showed a video where I can reproduce it consistently. If you squeeze, press down and then release squeeze before lifting up, it trigger this issue. You can avoid it by not releasing squeeze before lifting. But if you want a better temporary fix, you can open the pen menu with the pencil and then close the pen menu with the pencil before you start writing. Then the issue won’t occur again until you switch pens.
