I’d like to submit a feature request regarding PDF annotation import compatibility in MarginNote 4.
My workflow is:
PDF annotation → import into MarginNote 4 → turn annotations into excerpts / mind map connections
The problem is that annotations created in WPS are not imported reliably into MarginNote 4, especially the note/comment text.
What I have tested:
- Before, I annotate with:
- Comment → Note Mode → highlight + note text
- Note
- Text comment
- I can also export annotations from the previous one as .fdf
- However, in MarginNote 4, I cannot find a clear “Import PDF Annotations” function like some earlier discussions mention
- After importing the PDF, the highlight may appear, but the annotation text is usually missing
- MarginNote 4 also does not seem to support directly importing .fdf annotation files
Why this matters:
Many users prefer the previous for comfortable first-pass reading and annotation, then want to use MarginNote for deeper structuring, linking ideas, and mind mapping.
Right now, this workflow is difficult because WPS annotations do not transfer well into MarginNote 4.
Feature requests:
- Please add or restore a clear “Import PDF Annotations” function in MarginNote 4
- Please improve compatibility with WPS-generated PDF annotations/comments
- If direct support is not possible, please document which annotation types/formats are supported
- Ideally, support importing annotation text, not only highlights
- If possible, support FDF/XFDF-based annotation import, or provide an official conversion workflow
Expected result:
A PDF annotated in the previous one should be importable into MarginNote 4 with both highlights and note text preserved as usable excerpts or linked annotations.
I’d really appreciate any clarification on:
- whether this is already supported in MN4
- whether support is planned
- which other software annotation types are compatible
