When I create an excerpt, I often want the exact format to be retained, basically like a cropped section (not the rectangle version).
This would help enormously to not loose familiarity where this exact format was sitting in a body of text.

The text in the PDF is in fact not saved in any style information in the document. Perhaps you could try using rectangle excerpts?

No that would add extra text which I don’t want to use in the mind map, and it would mean an extra step of highlighting in the first place before creating a rectangle.
You could maybe program it that a highlight would create a shape around the highlighted text. Not simply a rectangle but exactly the outside borders of the coloured area.

Are you saying that the images inside the highlighter are intercepted and then the intercepted images generate excerpts?
