Support external display (Stage Manager) in iPadOS

Hi MarginNote team and community,

I’m a regular user of MarginNote 4 on iPad Pro and would like to suggest a feature that could greatly improve the app for those of us working with external monitors in professional or academic environments:

:desktop_computer: Feature Request: Add support for true external display (Stage Manager) in iPadOS.

Currently, MarginNote only mirrors the iPad screen when connected to an external monitor. This results in black borders and underutilization of widescreen monitors (16:9 or 21:9). Given that iPad Pro (M1/M2/M4) with iPadOS 16/17 already supports extended display mode in compatible apps, it would be extremely helpful if MarginNote adopts this functionality as well.

What would this enable?

  • Use the external monitor to display the mind map or study panel, while editing the PDF on the iPad (or vice versa).
  • Improve multitasking for complex studies, research projects, legal workflows, etc.
  • Enhance the iPad’s role as a main productivity workstation.

 I encourage other users to support this idea, and I hope the development team considers it for a future update.

Thanks for building such a powerful and complete app!

Hello, thank you for using MN and sharing your suggestions with us. We will definitely pass your feedback to the developers. Would it be possible for you to provide some screenshots to better illustrate the current situation?

Dear MarginNote Support Team,

Thank you for your prompt response.

As requested, I am attaching two images to better illustrate the current situation and the proposed feature.

:camera: First image (current state):

This image shows how MarginNote 4 behaves when connecting an iPad Pro M4 to an external monitor using a USB-C cable.
As you can see, the monitor only mirrors the iPad screen, preserving the same 4:3 aspect ratio and showing identical content. This results in black bars on the sides of widescreen monitors (typically 16:9 or 21:9) and limits efficient use of external screen space.

:camera: Second image (feature proposal):

This image illustrates a proposed extended display mode using Stage Manager.
In this setup, the iPad shows the main PDF document, while the external monitor displays the related mind map independently. This would enable a far more productive and visually optimized workflow, fully leveraging the external monitor’s resolution.

I hope these images help clarify the suggestion and are useful to the development team. I remain available for any further information or future updates.

Kind regards,

Johann
