I’d likely like to truly invest into MarginNote, especially with version 4 being out for some time, however I keep finding posts across the web that sync issues and data loss is still an ongoing issue with MarginNote? I used v3 even without realise they weren’t updating it on Setapp (Mac only) and was truly enamoured like so many, but it was for one project and no longer needed to use it. However, now I’ve returned to studies that require lots of reading material!
So should someone new stay away or it’s somehow still worth handing money over? I would be getting it for Mac & iPadOS.
Bonus: What ways can I avoid iCloud or use another provider, at least with iPadOS since that’s more locked down?
I’m interested in what the community, the users, have to say. Thank you in advance <3
I sync and use on multiple devices regularly. Never lost a document or study guide in MN3 or MN4. It takes a bit of time on macOS, but if you let the app stay open instead of quitting a session, sync is not an issue. Sync is annoyingly slow on iPad or iPhone; for no apparent reason; but less so if you make sure to open MN regularly during the day. iCloud is the only choice AFAIK, but so what? It works.
Oh MarginNote MacOS doesn’t try to stop the app quitting if it hasn’t synced? Isn’t periodically ‘phoning home’ to iCloud to check? I’d be using MarginNote on the Mac laptop so it’ll be going from sleep/wake several times a day.
So the inconsistencies in sync are the reason why many people are having data losses, or is there another technical explanation?
I had a play with the iPad versions of MN 3 & 4 and noticed I can save directly to Files on iPad. I’ve also been using Dropbox (via Files) for other apps. So I should be able to save and access my MarginNote files via Dropbox, if not, exclusively on iPad then manually transfer to Mac?
