When importing, does MN sever all links to original PDFs?

Once a pdf has been imported to MN, does MN sever all links to the original pdf? I imported into MN a bunch from my iPad’s Files. Can I safely delete the original pdfs from my iPad Files without that deleting or otherwise affecting the versions that were imported into MN? (Or does some sort of link remain between the original pdfs and the imported version?)

When importing, a duplicate of the original pdf file is added to the MarginNote app folder. There is no link to the original pdfs and you can delete them.

Follow up to this question:

Would it be possible, if not now then in a future update, to keep a link to the original pdf file if the user wanted to retain that connection? Or, perhaps, offer a “sync” feature similar to PDF Expert where the highlights made in the PDF Expert are “synced back” to the file in iCould, Dropbox, Onedrive, WEBdav, etc… I don’t mean exporting a flattened PDF but syncing a PDF with comments and highlights that another application would recognize as comments and highlights.

I understand it wouldn’t be possible to keep a link or to sync all of the rich metadata that MN creates, but even syncing highlighted or underlined passages would be useful to see and manipulate (resize, for example) in other applications. If that highlighted material were recognized by other applications, then those apps could use the highlighted passage in their own feature set, such as selective viewing or highlight extraction.
