I’ve always appreciated MN4 and the value it provides, but I’m concerned about the slow pace of development, especially given how rapidly AI is advancing. The current AI trend presents a huge opportunity, and I’d love to see MN4 take a more proactive approach to integrating AI features.
Integrating ChatGPT via OpenAI’s API is relatively straightforward—many developers, even those at an early stage, can build a working LLM app in just a few hours. With tools like agentic AI IDEs (e.g., Cursor AI), the process is even faster. Given this, I’m wondering what the main blockers are for the MN4 team when it comes to adding AI-powered features.
One simple and effective way to start would be to introduce an AI-powered summary feature. Even without full document RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation), just allowing users to select text and generate a summary via OpenAI would be a great first step. A server-side request relay system could handle this efficiently without requiring complex in-app integrations. This should be achievable within a short development cycle.
Additionally, looking at the state of third-party plugins (such as those listed here), it’s clear that there’s a need for better, more functional solutions. Many of these plugins are either broken or poorly designed, leaving users without effective AI-powered enhancements.
I strongly encourage the MN4 team to prioritize AI integration. Even an incremental rollout would make a significant impact on the user experience and keep MN4 competitive in this evolving space. Looking forward to seeing the progress!
I don’t think this tone is necessary. I for one am not eager for ChatGPT to appear in margin note yet, there are plenty of other features I continue to wait for and would like more. It isn’t just a given that everything needs AI in it yesterday. Margin Note has long been different to its competition. Look at notability with AI right on its front page making little images. I honestly can’t see a single use for it. It sounds like you are a coder yourself, you could just make the third party plugin in two weeks and share it with all of us.
I agree. I was so crossed the line with such demeaning tone. I regret saying so and I’ve edited the original post not to include any offensive tone.
Also, you are right on the point that it would be helpful if I’m a coder myself then I should probably work on it rather than complaining. I’m more prone to data analysis field so I can’t code the plugin unfortunately.
Dear user, we’re constantly working hard to bring you more advanced features. Currently, we’re in an exciting stage of preparing to roll out some cutting - edge functions related to intelligent assistance. You can look forward to it in the near future, and we’ll keep you updated on the latest news. Stay tuned!
Just hoping that the near future doesn’t mean summer or the end of the year. You see, many people including me use Marginnote for study and the new semester has just started. It would have been better if it the product release schedule better aligned with majority students’ semester schedule.
